Mohamed Shiraz Takes Maiden ODI Wicket in Weather-Interrupted Third ODI

The third One Day International (ODI) between Sri Lanka and New Zealand was abandoned due to persistent rain, with only 21 overs of play taking place at Pallekele International Stadium on Sunday. In the brief period of play, New Zealand reached a score of 112/1 before the weather intervened.

The match, which had little impact on the series outcome as New Zealand had already lost the first two ODIs, saw the Blackcaps win the toss and choose to bat first. The early moments of the innings started promisingly, but New Zealand lost their first wicket in the fourth over. Tim Robinson, attempting a drive, mishit the ball, sending it to the mid-off fielder and gifting Mohamed Shiraz his first-ever wicket in ODIs.

Despite the early loss, Will Young provided stability for New Zealand. He aggressively capitalized on any loose deliveries, scoring boundaries off both Shiraz and Chamindu Wickramasinghe in consecutive overs. On the other hand, Henry Nicholls used sweeps and laps effectively to keep the scoreboard ticking. The pair formed an unbeaten 88-run partnership, with Young reaching a solid 56 not out before rain forced the abandonment of the match.

Brief Scores:

  • New Zealand 112/1 (Will Young 56*, Henry Nicholls 46*) vs Sri Lanka.
  • Match abandoned due to rain.

While the match did not reach its full potential due to the weather, Shiraz’s achievement of taking his first ODI wicket in such a scenario stands out. His performance, coupled with a promising partnership from the New Zealand batsmen, highlighted some positives before the rain forced the end of play.
